Big 12, Pac-12 become first Power Five conferences to announce media days being held virtually
Preseason college football events are pivoting in light of ongoing COVID-19 concerns
While there's still no definitive answer on when -- or if -- college football will start in 2020, conferences around the country continue to pivot on the format of their preseason media days. On Thursday evening, Brett McMurphy of Stadium reported that the Pac-12 was moving its upcoming media day to a virtual format. The event was originally scheduled for July 29 in Los Angeles. The news comes one day after the Big 12 moved its media days to a virtual event instead of hosting them on July 20-21 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington as originally planned.?
The Pac-12 and Big 12 join the Mountain West, AAC, Mid-American Conference and Conference USA in moving their media days to an online format. These moves all come in response to the COVID-19 pandemic across the country forcing people to use social distancing.?
The ACC, Big Ten and SEC have yet to announce their intentions for media days, though the SEC. SEC Media Days are scheduled for July 13-16 in Atlanta. ACC Media Days are scheduled for July 22-23 in Charlotte and the Big Ten Kickoff Luncheon is slated for the same two days in Chicago. With conferences one by one moving their media days to a virtual format, it's hard to imagine any conference holding theirs in person as normal despite a growing list of states, Georgia included, opening back up.?
It's also not clear if college football will start uniformly this season. Penn State coach James Franklin called for an , though Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said there was a "significant chance" the .
